Honoring Don Edgar

In Memory of a Beloved Friend, Father, & Mentor

There are some people who leave an indelible mark on us—people who, through their presence, humor, and strength, teach us what it means to live with integrity and kindness. Don Edgar was one of those people. When I was commissioned to paint a portrait in his memory, I felt a deep sense of honor and responsibility, knowing how much he meant to his family and friends. Through this piece, I hope to capture not only his likeness but also the spirit of a man who touched so many lives.

A Lasting Legacy of Strength and Humor

Don Edgar was known for his strength and unwavering values. He was sturdy, especially with his sons, Diego and Juan, and those around him, holding himself with a kind of grace that comes only with experience. But alongside this strength was a warmth and humor that brought people together. He was always quick with a funny anecdote or a story that could make us laugh. I remember one such story vividly: over a seafood lunch in Alemeda, he told us about a time when he was traveling with América de Cali, one of Colombia's most renowned soccer teams, as an assistant coach. On that trip, an airline hostess accidentally spilled a Coke on him mid-flight. Rather than react with frustration, Don Edgar turned it into a moment of charm and humor, setting an example of how to handle life’s small stumbles with charisma and kindness. This was the kind of person he was—a man who taught by example, and who could find humor in any situation.

The Heart of a Teacher and Mentor

Beyond his family and friends, Don Edgar left an incredible legacy as a sports teacher. Throughout his career, he helped countless young people grow into adulthood, guiding them not just as an instructor but as a mentor. He had a genuine desire to help others succeed and become better versions of themselves, a quality that earned him respect from his students and fellow coaches alike. Even as he grew older and entered the later years of his life, this passion for supporting others remained strong.

A Loyal Friend: Remembering Lila

At his side for many years was Lila, his loyal beagle. She was more than just a pet—she was his best friend, especially during the later stages of his life. Their bond was unmistakable, and when Lila passed away before him, it was a difficult loss. Including Lila in this painting felt essential, as she was such a vital part of his daily life and companionship. In many ways, remembering her alongside him is a way of capturing that steadfast loyalty and warmth that he extended to all those he loved.

Honoring Don Edgar Through Art

This painting is a tribute to Don Edgar’s memory, created to honor the legacy of a man who was a friend, a father, and a role model. He was a man of strong values, with a sturdy character, yet he was also good-humored and always ready to lend a hand or a listening ear. It’s a way to remember him as he was—a person who embodied the very best qualities, who lived fully, and who left a profound impact on the people fortunate enough to know him.

I hope this piece will serve as a reminder of his enduring influence and the joy he brought to those around him. For his sons and everyone who knew him, may this painting keep alive the memory of his strength, his humor, and the life lessons he shared with us all.
